What a sweet book! I know that may not make you want to read it, but that was my first reaction as I finished it. It's about a family living in Northeast England between the World Wars- times are rough and family means everything. Young Lecky (short for Alexander) lives with his no-nonsense mum and his one legged, hard working dad. Downstairs lives his aunt and Uncle Freddie, Lecky's confidant and bosom buddy. They have many adventures together including rescuing the Prince of Wales from a river, telling the butcher dad is dead just to get free meat pies for a party to win over the girl Lecky's in love with, and learning less than savory poems in order to get a scholarship at the grammar school.
This book is really a collection of interesting and funny vignettes that will make you smile.
